Excerpt from free question part of “Phoning in Fraud: The Story of Jacob Smith”
Context: Mr. Smith allowed reviewer to ask almost any question and he would reply in turn.
Interviewer: Mr. Smith thank you for agreeing to this section, not many people in your type of situation do.
Mr. Smith: Oh it’s no problem. So shall we get started?
Interviewer: Yes, lets. So first of if you had to describe yourself in one word, what would that word be?
Mr. Smith: Gifted.
Interviewer: Well that’s an interesting one to go with, what makes you go with that word?
Mr. Smith: It’s quite simple really. Ever since I was young, I’ve been better at everything than everyone around me. It even came to a point where the people who were supposed to be examples to me fell behind.
Interviewer: So if you are as gifted as you say, why did you turn to fraud to make your living? Ruining lives in the process?
Mr. Smith: First off the only lives I “ruined” were those of people getting fat off stealing money from the poor and destitute. Second, the reason? Huh I think I’ve long since forgotten that. Maybe it excites me? Maybe I’ve forgotten how to live normally
Interviewer: I see, next can you tell me how many cases of fraud you have been involved in?
Mr. Smith: Sure, why not? To date I have thieved from 984 people, if I had made it to the end of the year I would have hit the full thousand.
Interviewer: So with that many cases how many years have you been going at this?
Mr. Smith: This is my 4th year. One case a day excluding weekends and holidays. Almost makes me feel like a real business man
Interviewer: Interesting. Well moving away from this subject would you be willing to talk about your family at all?
Mr. Smith: Not in the slightest. It’s hard to talk about something you’ve never had.
Interviewer: So would you say that you lack of a family in your eyes is what caused you to go down this path?
Mr. Smith: Ahhh and there’s the million dollar question. Sadly I’m going to have to leave this one up to your imagination……..I find myself missing my cell.
Interviewer: Well if that’s the case, thank you very much for your time, and for some insight into yourself. Maybe we can talk more next time?
Mr. Smith: Of course, assuming you can ask the right questions…
